So, how is your career’s New Year’s Resolution working out? By now, some of us are feeling good about effectively holding true to “the cause” we set out to pursue in the new year – but this is early into the year, I’m guessing most of us are still struggling with the discomfort that comes with the introduction of a significant change in our professional lives.
This discomfort can come in many forms – lost time, longing for “the way things used to be,” the pain of learning a new process and, of course, the feelings of inadequacy of trying something new.
So the question becomes: Is the “cause” worth the pain and discomfort?
After all, we live in a society that despises discomfort and is driven by speed – how fast we can get or give information, how much we can get done in a small amount of time, etc. There is nothing wrong with being efficient. But we can’t let the time and pain of implementing new behavior into our careers deter making “the cause” a reality.
Allow me to provide a personal example. My cause this year was to learn how to develop videos that I can post on YouTube, ultimately providing career insight and inspiration. I bought an “easy-to-learn” program on how to record, edit and post to YouTube. A month later, I can tell you it’s been anything but easy! While this may be a piece of cake for some people, I’ve never been a tech guru, and it’s been a major discomfort for me. I’ve had to consult with several experts already on this “easy project” and I’m still learning all the little exceptions to the rules.
But, I can testify that the discomfort is temporary. I’m no expert yet, but I’m getting better at it, realizing how much the benefits outweigh the pain I’ve been feeling. The key is keeping your eyes on your cause’s finish line, and to EXPECT discomfort along the way. When you expect it, it’s much easier to manage.
Here are just a few examples of workplace and career causes I’ve seen others pursue, too often giving into their discomfort too quickly:
· Resolving a dispute with a coworker
· Approaching one’s manager with the hope of better controlling workload
· Creating a new process to implement for an entire team
· Looking for another job in a suppressed job market
· Going back to school to advance one’s career now and for the future
· Taking on a second job to help pay for bills
So if your will to achieve your cause is faltering, ask yourself if you were expecting discomfort to be a part of the process. If not, try to reset your mindset, breaking down the goal into smaller achievements.
What will you do differently in order to create the change you want? Be careful about taking the easy road with managing changes in your career. One day you might wake up to find that you don’t have a choice.
